We started from Kolkatha after an hour delay and arrived safely at Paro Airport at 11 AM. The flight captain took the Boeng 737 just as Joy ride showing the fissures and planes of middle Himalayan.
While flying above we could see a mountain peak,Jomolhari (bride of Kanchunjhanga) 24,035 ft, rising above the sea of white clouds. Paro International airport is a small airport , a piece of flat land in the deep valley of Bhutan. The approach to the airport needs careful flying through the valley , which very few pilots in the world could manage.
The airport was spic and pan , the staff all in uniform greeted us on arrival. Modestly decorated , the piece of land speaks about the modesty and humility of the religion. We drove for twos hour from Paro airport through valleys and mountains to reach Capital Thimpu. Altitude of Thimphu: 2350 mts. Temperature warm 28 C. Stayed at hotel “City Hotel” ,Spacious room , modern bath, Wooden floor with high ceilings at the top floor (fourth).
A small monastery near our hotel. It was early morning,still devotees are going round ringing bells and turning prayer wheels.The writings on prayer wheels are six sanskrit syllables and it says ‘Om Mani Padme Hum’ – The Jewel seating on a lotus.
In Bhutan it is often written in Tibetan font. One who turns the wheel , supposed to have recited the chant and almighty have listened.
The main attraction of Thimpu is the gigantic statue of Shakyamuni Buddha ,known as Buddha Dodenma. It is said that in the 8th century Buddhist monk from Indian subcontinent known as Padmasambhava , also known as Guru Rinpoche, constructed the first Buddhist monastery in Tibet. He had prophesied that “a statue of Shakyamuni would be built in the region between Wong and Paro, bestow blessings of peace and harmony in the world”. The writing was revealed after 672 years ,but the letter requesting to build was delivered much later exactly after 1999 years after it was written. Buddha Dordenma is a gigantic Shakyamuni Buddha statue in the mountains of Bhutan celebrating the 60th anniversary of fourth king Jigme Singye Wangchuck. With a Zero starting budget the project started in the year 2006 and finsished in 2015.
Inside the hall there are paintings depicting the life history of shakyamuni and numerous small Buddha’s Idol surrounding the Bodhisatta.
Memorial Stupa, Thimphu, also known as the Thimphu Chorten, is a stupa The stupa, built in 1974 to honor the third Druk Gyalpo, Jigme Dorji Wangchuck (1928–1972).This does not enshrine human remains , but Druk Gyalpo’s photo in a ceremonial dress adorns a hall in the ground floor.
National Animal Takin is also called cattle chamois or gnu goat,is a large species of ungulate found in the eastern Himalayas . Recently mitochondrial DNA studies have identified close relation with Sheep families.
The Punakha Dzong, is the administrative centre of Punakha district in Punakha, Bhutan. Constructed by Ngawang Namgyal , 1st Zhabdrung Rinpoche, in 1637–38,it is the second oldest and second largest Fortress and having most majestic structures. It was also the seat of administrative government of Bhutan till 1955, when it was transferred to Thimpu.
The Dochula Pass is a mountain pass at a height of 10,200 ft on the road from Thimpu to Punakha where 108 memorial chortens or stupas known as “Druk Wangyal Chortens” have been built by Ashi Dorji Wangmo Wangchuk, the eldest Queen Mother . Apart from the chortens there is a monastery called the Druk Wangyal Lhakhang (temple), built in honour of the fourth Druk Gyalpo (head of the state of Bhutan), Jigme Singye Wangchuck.
Day 04: 28-April-2019 Punakha/Wangdue – Paro Sightseeing (Distance: 140 kms. / Driving Time: 5 hrs. / Altitude of Paro: 2280 mts.)
- stop at Lamperi to visit Royal Botanical Park.
- Check in at the hotel.
- Ta Dzong – National Museum
- Evening free for leisure. Overnight stay at Paro.
Day 05: 29-April-2019 Paro Sightseeing
- Taktsang Monastery – called “Tiger’s Nest” (2hrs hike from the base camp).
- Later visit Drukgyel Dzong & Kyichu Monastery.
- Overnight stay at Paro
